Seychelles

This is my last fall break living in India so I took the opportunity to visit the Seychelles - islands off the coast of Africa.  People think of the Maldives and the Seychelles when they think of beautiful islands and diving. I got to the Coral Strand Hotel Saturday morning around 10.  It's a nice hotel right on the beach and I have a mountain view room.  It is on the main island - Mahe and is near a lot of restaurants and shops.

On Saturday, I just took a nap, read and took a few walks along the beach.  On Sunday I took off walking along a main road and went an hour out and an hour back and saw a lot of villages and scenic views.

On Monday I took a tour all over Mahe Island it is only 27k. by 15km. We saw some gorgeous views at the Mission Viewing Station.

We ate creole food at a restaurant in Takamaka - the tables were just sitting in the sand and we had a beautiful view.  We saw some giant tortoises at the restaurant and at the tea plantation.  They are native here, but there are no longer any in the wild - only on one island 1500 km from here where 100,000 of them live.

On Wednesday I set off hiking by myself on a popular route - anse Major.  I rode the public boss to the stop nearest the hike and set off.  I was awarded with wonderful views.

On Thursday I visited the island of LaDigue.  It was gorgeous!  We saw the plantation house, how they make coconut oil, the vanilla plantation, and lots of tortoises!  We also got to hang out at a great beach for awhile.

We also went to the island of Praislin.    We had a nice creole lunch and I invited these other two guys who were traveling alone to eat with me because on Monday I ate at the table with everyone but had to eat in silence since I was the only one who didn't speak French.  One of the guys took me up on the offer and we ate together.  He was from Manchester and was an architecht who restores churches that are hundreds of years old - very cool!

Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm, Sweden

Stockholm, Sweden

Another gorgeous day in the mid 70s.   Sweden is also celebrating the summer solstice so the city was relatively empty.  We drove around the city and the guide pointed out a lot of things, but I didn’t get many good pictures.

The best part was Skansen The oldest open air museum in the world.  It was awesome and I could have spent a whole day there.  They had buildings from all over Sweden mostly from the 1700s.  There were animals all over.  Some in pens near the houses like the people would have had back then.  They also had an animal preserve type thing with Nordic animals, a petting zoo, etc.  There were food stalls and craft demonstrations of glass blowing, ironworks, etc.

Stockholm is one city I would really like to visit again - We passed a viking museum etc.  I will need to make sure not to go during summer solstice time so that things are open.

for hours after the ship took off we passed islands with summer homes.
