Guatemala - San Jorge La Laguna Homestay

Tonight we were staying with local families in their homes so they split us up into 2s and 3s to stay with different families.

After the market we drove about a half hour to San Jorge la Laguna to stay with our host families. Mia, Nicole, and I went to the house of Juan and Alejandra- their 8 year old grand daughter was very welcoming.

Juan has participated in the intrepid host family program for 8 years. They get paid and everyone that stays brings gifts. We brought rice, noodles, bean, sponges, toilet paper and cookies.  We had noodles and chicken for dinner and then they gave us traditional Guatemalan clothes to wear to their church.

It wasn't really a service- more like a community event. It is the 28th of December and all the kids are off of school.  They had a raffle for gift baskets and played games. It is chilly up here but our beds were warm and they had a toilet out in the garage area that you had to flush by pouring a bucket of water in it.

In the morning they fed us beans, bread and eggs. There were chickens in a cage by the bathroom so they have a steady egg supply. Our family was super warm and inviting - not everyone's was. It helped that Mia and I speak some Spanish. I was a little nervous about the home stay but the three of us had fun.
